Research

I decided to do my research topic about the MOMA’a Collection 1880s–1940s which holds various art pieces and are arranged in roughly chronological order. I saw this as a "Art through the ages" type of exhibit, where people can come in and experience the many different types of art and how art has changed over time. All the different styles and mediums used or what form were favored in the time has got me thinking of how art was viewed, treated, and used throughout time.

Over the years art is seen in many different ways at one point it's treated as an expression of wealth like lavish portraits and intricate sculptures then it's treated as something to express one’s skill and individualism with things like abstract art. Then it's treated as a medium of confrontation with paintings and pictures invoking images of horrific events or dark analogies like war pictures or people starving on the streets during the great depression, then soon no later in postmodern times it’s almost treated like a joke, pushing the limits of what can be considered art and being used as a tool of ridicule to make fun of people who try to look for a deeper meaning in something silly or mundane people even going as far as putting a urinal and trash on display being called and treated like a masterpiece by people who didn’t get the point.

As I looked at all those paintings and sculptures I began to think about how I could connect all these different artworks for a single idea for a game. I thought about this progression in art and the progression in games and saw some connections. During the 19th century art was mostly about the artist skill and individualism expressing themselves and their ideas the best they could with what they had and during the late 1900’s and early 2000’s that what gaming was, a bunch of people had this really great idea they thought was fun and they got together using what they had to make their idea, the thing they wanted to express, as real and as good as they could with the limitations they had. However over time as art became better and styles were improved upon artists were running out of ideas on how to make things better, so they decided to treat art differently and approach it in a new fashion, pushing the limits of what art is using things ironically and even things considered bad. Games followed a similar phase where technology became advanced and graphics were great that game developers began pushing the limit of what a game was or having things in a game that would normally be considered bad like clunky controls like most of the simulator games like surgeon simulator or bread simulator. With so many connections and similarities I began to think why art and games are rarely treated or seen as equals, games are for the most part seen as a base medium of entertainment and art is treated as something of reverence.

So for my prototype I’m trying to create something akin to a digital museum where games are treated and viewed as fine art. You go into different rooms with various different displays showing games still of old or well-known games. The first room I want to create is a monochrome room that’s black and white and showcases one of the firsts games like pong and then other rooms showcasing popular 2d and 3d games. It’s a very simple idea but if developed a bit more and given more time I could do things like adding a audio tour or small demos to play some of the games while you learn about them, it would be a great and fun way to learn about game history
