Postmortem

For this project we had to create our own unique world with an interesting premise and a basic history of the world. Then we had to create a text based game in that world. The world I decided to go for was a magic fantasy world set in modern times. Like a what if everyone suddenly got magic powers that had specific but loose rules that were exploitable to the point of allowing for reality bending feats. I wanted to create a magical world about how people would really react to magic and how it would .For this world I created a system so that nobody could use magic to its fullest unless they joined specific magic groups and by simply being a member would allow them to use magic. Then as a premise of my game I decided that people would only be allowed to join after taking a test to see if they were eligible and met the standards to join their groups, taking inspiration from shows like "My Hero" and "Hunter X Hunter". Then have the choices made by the player decide if they pass or failed.

Things that went over well in this project would be the world, the event system, and give the player items. I was able to create the the world, how it came to be, how it functions, and how it progresses over time in a very fleshed out way giving me multiple ideas for where I could take the game and would interest the player. Something to help me with that was how to create variables so that the player's choices can have an impact on future events and how their decisions effect the ending.  I was also able to make choices have different outcomes based on what items they were given giving it some variety.

However there were a few things that went wrong here and there during the project. I wasn't to put in as many events as I wanted either because there wasn't enough time or I just didn't know how to do it smoothly or correctly. The game also railroads the player down a single path and gives them little freedom and the diverging path, little as it is, just bluntly tells the player they're wrong. Another problem with the game people had was that nothing interesting happened, events felt empty, there were no interactions with other characters to the point that the player will forget that there are other characters around them and make the single interaction or mention of them feel off.

Overall this project reminded me just how broad games can be and how to work with it. Like how to create variables, items, and how to create events that are influenced by past player choices. I also learned a bit about creating my own world and how to shape it, develop it, and use it's history to creating an interesting game. I have a better understanding of what people look for in a game and how they interact with an environment, what actions they might lean towards if given the option. Possibly try to make it smaller but more interactive, have there just be more people you can interact with and have those interactions affect future events or change future interactions.
