Postmortem

Introduction:

The original concept for my game or the idea I wanted to focus on was getting stronger after each major battle and visibly change as you do so. The inspiration for this was things like kamen rider and devil may cry where when they defeat a big enemy they are greeted with a new form or some kind of power up. This lead me to originally want to design a character who was on a motorcycle who fought monsters but this was scraped do to difficulty seeing any changes done to a tiny sprite model and with input from other students I decided to make it about angels vs demons and having the enemies and players from and abilities loosely based on chess pieces.

What went right (5 things):

1. designing the sprites: coming up with sprites general design was pretty easy. I tried to connect the design of the spite with the piece it relates to.

2.player movement and shooting: it was easy creating the mechanics for the player to move and shoot and connect to the game controller.

3.enemy movement and shooting: i decided to not let pawns shoot and set shooting for the other enemies on a timer and have them move in a side to side motion.

4.wave generator: using a unity tutorial I created a great enemy spawner that was very flexible.

5.scene changing: making the scene change based on when the level was done pretty easily, I made only possible to do so when you met a certain score requirement.

What went wrong (5 things):

1. sound effect: never got sound effects to work

2.background: tried different things but it never worked out, either it was jarring, didn't fit the aesthetic, or it just  didn't loop correctly

3.animation: couldn't get to it.

4.music: couldn't get to it.

5.repetition: I had to make several copies of a bunch of scripts and it took up a lot of time.

What you learned:

Use my time more responsibly, pay more attention to what my teacher sends me, think about how to reuse code in different scenes, I probably didn't need to make as many copies of scripts that I needed to.

Next steps in the development:

If I can I want to make this a full proper game with the works. Right now it has bare minimum effects with the player and enemy turning red when hit but I would like to add animation effects to it like actually flinching when hit, having the bullets explode, movement animations, a moving background, and maybe something for when they do a special shot.  Next would be to add sound effects like impacts, explosion sounds and maybe even have there just be a demonic grunting sound when enemies get hit. Lastly maybe add background music, something cool and tense, either something fantasy or classic related.
